On this International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we remember those who suffered in the dungeons of injustice and cruelty within the prisons of the defunct Syrian regime. They endured indescribable, bitter agony—brutal torture, abuse, psychological and physical torment, along with utterly inhumane and cruel treatment. Isolated from the world, with no one hearing their cries, their bodies scattered in dark cells or piled in mass graves, they suffered in silence, facing an uncertain fate where pain blended with oppression, and hope with illusion. They found mercy only from their Creator.

We have documented 622 cases of enforced disappearances in Syria. Documentation does not bring the disappeared back, but it prevents their absence from becoming a mere statistic. It does not restore justice, but it sets it on the right path.

The international community, humanitarian organizations, and governments must take effective steps to ensure the fate of these missing individuals is revealed, work towards ending arbitrary detentions, and restore the victims and their families’ right to knowledge and justice. Silence and burying our heads in the sand are not an option. Nations that claim to protect human rights are called upon to pressure the Syrian regime to disclose information about the forcibly disappeared, ensure fair trials, and provide justice to the families through mandatory material compensation.

We, the Association of Lebanese Political Detainees in Syrian Prisons, demand that the current Lebanese government grant us justice and provide us with compensation, similar to that given to detainees in Israeli prisons, with retroactive effect
